Excellent intermodal connections

DP World Antwerp enjoys the benefits of excellent intermodal connections to all major mainland European centres of consumption and production. Because of the port’s inland location, DP World Antwerp enjoys a more central position in Europe than any other North Sea port.

Road transport plays a crucial role in connecting the Port of Antwerp to its hinterland because of its central location in the European road network. The port is surrounded by an extensive network of motorways with direct and rapid connections to all major industrial centres in Flanders, Wallonia, the Netherlands, Germany, France and many other destinations in Europe.

The Truck Appoint System at Antwerp Gateway guarantees visiting trucks entrance to the terminal within their booked slot.

Since 20 March 2017, Antwerp Gateway is open during the night on weekdays for trucks. Thanks to this 24/5 opening, trucking companies can optimize their fleet by using the night time to deliver and pick up containers at the terminal.


Antwerp is one of the biggest European rail ports and part of the three main rail corridors in Europe. To develop the hinterland connectivity of the terminal, DP world Antwerp Gateway has entered into various partnerships with rail operators offering reliable rail products into Europe. The rail hub at Antwerp Gateway is able to handle 6 trains simultaneously benefiting from 6 rail tracks of 750 m and thus capable of handling any type of block train.





Transporting 1 TEU by truck from Basel (Switzerland) to Antwerp (Belgium) produces 0.54 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The Swiss rail shuttle (4 times a week) transports around 33.120 TEU annually. The port of Antwerp is both connected to the 1,500 km long Belgian waterway network and to the pan-European river and canal network because of its location in the middle of the Scheldt-Maas-Rhine delta.This results in a substantial 35% of all cargo to/from Antwerp Gateway being transported by barge.

Via the Albert canal, Antwerp Gateway is linked by waterway to the most important logistic hotspots in Belgium (Flanders and Wallonia). The DP World terminal in Liège (Trilogiport) is linked by regular barge shuttles. At Antwerp Gateway, a Gottwald Crane is available to ensure extra barge handling capacity.

Consolidation of inland shipping
